“The huge cast of characters, set against a fantastic backdrop with good doses of action, humor and fun, will surely captivate…”-Seattle Times
Knowing Harry Potter is from its movie.
At one spoken English class, I heard the name of J.K Rowling for the first time. One student mentioned it but I didn’t care much until I saw the first movie. Suddenly, naturally, I fell in love with the story between Harry Potter & his friends. At that time, there’re 4 books published. I finished reading the last 3 books in a short time. The winding story, the fanciful magic moved me deep. However, I didn’t read the first book for I’ve seen the movie already.
But this time, I’ve had the chance to read the first novel- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. There’s something different, the book I read is the English edition (it’s made in USA). I wanna talk about some feeling between Chinese edition & English edition.
First, what gives my feeling most deep is the conversation in England way between the roles, which you can never feel in Chinese edition. Of course the leader is the gamekeeper- Hagrid. Special pronunciation makes me have a headache. For example, the sentence And as for that cat, I’d like to introduce her to Fang sometimes. Do you know, every time I go up to the school, she follows me everywhere? is changed into An’as fer that cat, I’d like ter introduce her to Fang sometimes. D’yeh know, every time I go up ter the school, she follows me everywhere? Is this all right? Maybe there’s no good to people whose countries don’t take English as the first language, but it makes the English spoken countries especially the British people feel intimate. Try to think, if you meet the language of your homeland in a novel, will you feel very happy?
Of course, the abbreviation in the novel is also feature. For example, of course is changed in to ’course. The abbreviation reduces the nuisance of a sentence, makes it simply and clearly, the writer puts more words on the special language of the magic world.
Magic, fantasy are the topic of the novel, they’re the things really attract me. In Rowling’s words, modern school becomes mystical castle, heavy study becomes happy game. Maybe I can forsake all the reality away in this novel, and put myself into another world to find my dream which has been lost.
Friend ship, relative ship can not be overlooked either. The Dudleys & the magic world people, Snape & Albus Dumbledore, Malfoy & Ron, their treating to Harry are clearly different, it makes us feel the coldness & warmness between human feelings. The courage of Harry makes me admire, too.
All these things, the movie gives us direct sight, makes your eyes satisfied. The Chinese edition gives you enough room to fantasy. Because I’m poor of English words, I can’t understand the English edition quit well. But to touch the true Harry Potter in English is really wonderful. I suggest you read it if possible.
At last, I wanna thank my friend who lent me this book from the library which is open only for teachers.
比如, “And as for that cat, I'd like to introduce her to Fang sometimes. Do you know, every time I go up to the school, she follows me everywhere? ”变成了“An'as fer that cat, I'd like ter introduce her to Fang sometimes. D'yeh know, every time I go up ter the school, she follows me everywhere?” .
如“of course”变成了“'course” .
